Try to hit the ball in play rather than trying to hit home runs every time if you want to have a higher batting average. The goal is to send that ball back from which it came. Most times that balls are hit into the air, they’re easily caught.
When you are coaching a baseball team, remember to keep them happy and motivated to play, which goes a long way to their wanting to win. Group activities such as pizza parties and the like help build team camaraderie and will bond them together. When all is said and done, it is just a game so you have to remember not to get too serious about it.
Holding the ball right is as important as throwing it correctly. To begin, place your middle finger on the seam. Then, place a thumb on the opposite seam. This allows you to properly grip the ball for maximum speed and distance along with improved accuracy.
You must keep safety in mind when playing sports. This is surely the case with baseball as well. Avoid injury, by always knowing where specifically the ball is. A ball that’s errant may knock a tooth out if you’re not watching where it goes. Additionally, a slider sliding into the base can cause injury to your legs.
Everyone at bat must wear a batting helmet. These helmets provide protection against injuries to the head. The batting helmets that are the best will also have a face shield so that when balls are hit or thrown towards you, you won’t get hurt.
Be a hustler. This mentality can rub off on the team. This is a leadership quality and it helps the game to get taken seriously. You can be the difference maker and team leader that people look to for answers.
When coaching baseball, it’s important that your practice schedule is solid so all players are aware of what’s happening and are able to set personal goals. Usually, good baseball players need 10 minute warm-ups before 20 minutes of individual hitting and team drills. Then, have them run the bases for five minutes followed by 10 minutes of team defense and situational drills. End the practice with a ten-minute drill on defense for specific positions, then cool down. Team meetings can occur before or after practice.
Know how to stride properly in baseball. If you are right-handed, go with the left leg for picking it up at the release of the pitch. If you’re left-handed, do the exact opposite. Push your feet forward a foot or so to increase your momentum as the ball is coming toward you. Smaller people need to stride a shorter distance.
Pay attention to the batter when working in the outfield. Righties will tend to hit it to the left side of the field. Left-handed hitters hit more balls to right field. Knowing these mechanics of batting will help you anticipate where the batted ball will come before it is pitched.
